Abstract. One of the essential results of A. A. Savvin’s expedition to Vilyuy region of Yakutia at the end of the 30s is the fixation of folkloric material which is of scientific value as a representation of the most archaic layer of oral tradition. In this connection the paper for the first time examines the range of small genres and forms as an object of researcher’s close attention. The conceptuality of A. A. Savvin-collector is determined by systematicity of his approach when he goes beyond the tradition of perceiving small genres only as linguistic units and doesn’t limit himself to just fixing their lexical structure. Small genres in his materials are represented as integrity of verbal and non-verbal aspects of expression, in the context of correlation of textual and non-textual data including informants’ testimonies on genre conceptions in the tradition itself. Consequently A. A. Savvin’s studies changed cardinally the meaning of this stratum as textual sequence with its own principles of functioning, past and present diachronic changes. Such an approach to small genres promotes typological generalization of the acquired material as prototypical forms of archaic origin.
