Abstract. The article deals with approaches to the notion of indirectness when expressing threats in the English communication. When analyzing truncated threats, in which the directive part is derived from the communicative context, and the comissive part is implied, threats are identified with one communicative purpose, with a double purpose and with the change of a communicative purpose. A separate group consists of indirect threats of retaliation. As the study has shown, the most common way to mask an intention is to change the speaker’s communicative purpose.
