Abstract. The article is devoted to examining the role of a socio-cultural comment when translating realia. The definition of the term "realia" in the works of the Russian and foreign scientists is examined. Besides, the techniques that are used for translation of realia are given. The paper also describes the types of the socio-cultural comment the use of which, from the author’s point of view, is necessary for more accurate conveyance of national and historical colour. Finally, the author presents an example of translating realia with the help of the socio-cultural comment.
