TOPONYMS IN THE ENGLISH DETECTIVE STORIES BY ROBERT VAN GULIK AND THE TECHNIQUES TO TRANSLATE THEM INTO THE CHINESE AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES

Abstract. The article is devoted to analyzing onomastic realia, in particular, toponyms of medieval China, in the English detective stories by Robert Hans van Gulik "The Chinese Maze Murders", "The Chinese Bell Murders", "The Chinese Lake Murders", "The Chinese Gold Murders" and their Chinese and Russian translations. The researcher examines toponyms representing national and cultural colour, analyzes them from the viewpoint of etymological components and identifies the basic principles of using translation technique served to transfer them. The originality of the research involves identification of the most striking examples of onomastic realia and analysis of the basic techniques of their translation into the Chinese and Russian languages.
