Abstract. In the article the structure and functions of the lexico-semantic field "water" in V. V. Nabokov’s short story "Lik" are revealed. The author proves that the broad field "water", which has in its composition in addition to the nuclear groups many words denoting objects and phenomena associated with water, is the most important means of creating the image of blurred and permeable boundary between levels of reality depicted in the work. Through the linguistic analysis it is identified that the components of the lexico-semantic field "water" are actively involved in the composition of the tropes placed throughout the text that in turn unite in expanded implicit metaphors, which form the "subtext" of Nabokov’s short story.
