FROM "THE LEFT-HANDED CRAFTSMAN'’ TO "FLEA": WAYS TO TRANSFORM THE PLAY BY E. I. ZAMYATIN "FLEA" (1926-1929)

Abstract. The article examines the ways to transform the play by E. I. Zamyatin "Flea" on the basis of the two printed versions (1926 and 1929) created to stage the performance in the Moscow Art Academic Theatre-2 (Moscow, 1925) and in the Big Drama theatre (Leningrad, 1926). The paper aims to discover the basic tendencies of play editing, to identify the textual differences, to establish the author’s intention of these changes and to correlate both versions of "Flea" with the original text - "The Tale of Cross-eyed Lefty" by N. S. Leskov.
