ETYMOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ENGLISH PROVERB "WHEN IN ROME, DO AS THE ROMANS DO"

Abstract. The article discusses the etymology of the English proverb "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". Proverbs, as is known, reflect the centuries-old history of any language and its speakers. The authors attempt to find out in what way the historically English proverb praises the Roman values. Particular attention is paid to the history of the origin of the proverb, as well as individual cases of its use in contemporary English.
