Abstract. The article examines the issue of the role of strategies of cognitive linguistic activity while studying a foreign language and exercising communicative competence. The authors analyze the interpretations of the term "strategy" developed by modern domestic and foreign linguists, and substantiate the necessity of mastering the strategies of linguistic activity in the process of teaching a foreign language.
