EUPHEMISMS IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES PUBLICATIONS)

Abstract. The article deals with the content of the notion "political discourse" which has a special sublanguage and is an institutional kind of communication that uses a certain system of professionally-oriented signs. The authors focus on the speech manipulation in the Western media which is carried out through the use of political euphemisms. The euphemisms have a purposeful impact on the addressee and ideological nature. The types and functions of euphemisms are considered. As the material for the research the authors with the use of the continuous sampling method take the euphemisms from the articles of the newspaper The New York Times which have covered the events related to the conflict in Ukraine.
