Abstract. Various viewpoints on the notion of "phraseological derivation" are considered in the article. The author suggests differentiating between phraseological derivation (area of phrase formation) and dephraseological derivation (area of word building on the base of phraseological units), establishes criteria of derivativeness relations between deriving and derivative units, analyzes changes of structure and semantics of original units and ascertains the presence of semantic and structural semantic ways of phraseological derivation.
