Blinova Ol'ga Aleksandrovna
MGIMO University, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation

Abstract. The article analyzes the tendency to identify free indirect speech with internal monologue, which is observed in the literature on linguistics and literary criticism. The analysis of the English-language literary text, given in this article, shows that the confusion of these terms is inappropriate. It is stated in the course of the analysis that free indirect speech is really one of the forms of internal monologue introduction. However, as the internal monologue can be implemented in the text using other methods, so the functions of free indirect speech may go beyond the frameworks of internal monologue introduction.
