RETURN TO THE PAST. HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY IN NOVELS OF MICHAEL FRAYN

Abstract. The article considers the reference to history and biography in the novels of the contemporary English writer Michael Frayn (1993). The various ways of creating the image of the past in comparison to the positions of new historicism and nominalism are analyzed. The uniqueness of narrative is studied. The features of its functions in the creation of the image of the past are identified. The semantic-formative nature of the reference to the image of the past is revealed in the context of the novel problematics. This approach is for the first time implemented in the analysis of these works in the Russian literary criticism.
