THE EUPHEMISTIC FUNCTION OF METONYMY (BY THE MATERIAL OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE)

Abstract. The article considers the euphemistic function of metonymy by the material of English euphemisms of a toilet subject. Special attention is paid to the analysis of euphemism formation of this thematic group by means of (a) metonymic transfer and (b) with the help of a synecdoche. Various types of correlation of adjacency, being the basis of euphemisation, are highlighted. While comparing English, Russian and Polish euphemisms the author reveals the features of similarity and difference in using metonymy in various languages.
