Abstract. The article examines demonstrative pronouns in the English and Tatar languages as a lexical means to express the functional-semantic category of certainty. The author describes the process of grammaticalization of demonstratives into the markers of certainty and concludes about the absence in the Tatar language of deictic neutral demonstrative capable of transforming into the definite article. The paper presents the evidence of functional difference of demonstrative pronouns from the definite articles because of the presence of deictic and anaphoric functions with the first ones; the researcher also provides examples of principal cases of using the demonstratives in the context.
