S. YA. ALYMOV’S AND M. YU. LEVIDOV’S TRANSLATION RECEPTION OF THE NOVEL BY JAMES JOYCE "ULYSSES": "ULYSSES" (FRAGMENTS) 1929

Abstract. The article makes an attempt to analyze the translation reception of the novel by J. Joyce "Ulysses" from the viewpoint of the theory of receptive aesthetics. The translation of 1929 performed by S. Ya. Alymov and M. Yu. Levidov serves as a material for investigation. The special attention is paid to the interest of translators in the novel by Joyce under the established cultural conditions of Soviet Russia of those days. Analysis of translation allows claiming that S. Ya. Alymov’s and M. Yu. Levidov’s interest in Joyce’s novel was conditioned by the new artistic devices: "stream of consciousness" and "naturalism" creating a conflictogenity of perception and break with the accepted literary conventions.
