Abstract. The article examines the problems connected with such genre formations as "cruel" romance, song and city ballad. Basing on a postulate according to which the border between these relational but nonidentity genre formations is flexible the author, taking as a material the Soviet song "Light" to words from M. V. Isakovsky, shows the process of transforming a lyrical song into a "cruel" romance. Such transformational mechanisms, according to the author, are also the basis for numerous folkloric adaptations of popular compositions.
