Abstract. Norms and maxims which should improve translation make it inaccessible for the user of translation, thereby delaying the development of the theory of translation for more than one hundred years, because their rigidity and categoricity do not allow originating some new translating sciences or at least significant branches of translation. It is time to suggest an alternative to norms and maxims as tools for translation improvement.
