TRANSLATION OF NON-EQUIVALENT VOCABULARY AS A PROBLEM OF THE THEORY OF TRANSLATION (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE STORY BY V.V.NABOKOV "IN MEMORY OF L.I.SHIGAEV")

Abstract. The article analyzes the means for translating non-equivalent vocabulary taken as a basis by V. V. Nabokov in the story "In Memory of L. I. Shigaev" written in the Russian language and translated into English by the author himself. The analysis testifies that translating non-equivalent vocabulary is possible and the favourite means of translation with the mentioned author is the assimilating translation securing the transfer of an aesthetic component of a literary text. A word is the most frequent type of non-equivalent vocabulary.
