Abstract. The author considers the questions of literary text use in the process of teaching classical students to speak the English language, pays special attention to the role of poetic text in immersing students in another culture, presents the experience of work with sonnets by W. Shakespeare, and gives the description of three stages of working with these compositions, suggested by the author.
