Abstract. The author considers proverbs in the context of English literary works. Typically proverbs are used in literary text as folklore quotes, to which a hero refers. The use of proverbs is aimed at the intensification of expression. The context, having the function of the situational concretization of linguistic units semantic meaning, can convert the semantics of proverbs to some extent. In particular, the evaluative meaning of proverb can be changed from positive to negative and vice versa under the influence of context.
