PECULIARITIES OF TENSE USAGE IN "EL PAIS" HEADLINES OF 2016 AND 1977

Abstract. The article analyzes the basic peculiarities of headlines of the most popular Spanish political newspaper "El Pais". The author compares grammatical tense usage in the periodical’s headlines of 2016 and 1977. In headlines of 2016 there is a great variety of tenses but they tend to be more informative. Headlines of 1977 perform a clearly observable attractive function. Originality of the research is in the fact that peculiarities of newspaper headlines are examined in their development, since headlines of different historical periods are compared.
