Abstract. In the article the key problems of the history of polovnichestvo (a special kind of rent of arable lands and grounds) in the European North of Russia are analyzed. The basic attention is given to the bases of the economic life of this type of landmen during the XVIth and at the beginning of the XIXth centuries and to the evolution of their legal status.
