Abstract. The paper considers the ways of translating subject-naming units from Russian into English. The aim of the study is to determine the main patterns in the English translation of subject-naming units in A. P. Chekhov’s play “The Seagull”. The scientific novelty of the research lies in carrying out a comparative study of the first ever English translation of the play and one of its recent translations, which has not been done before. The comparative study makes it possible not only to trace the main translation trends of the last century, but also to consider the direction of lexical changes in the English language. In the course of the study, the author identified the subject-naming units in the original text of A. P. Chekhov’s play “The Seagull”, examined the variants of their translation into English, conducted a comparative analysis of the naming units. The research findings showed the following patterns: when translating proper names into English, transliteration and transcription are used; the most significant differences are observed when translating a character’s name and patronymic, age, marital and social status and occupation. This phenomenon can be considered as a consequence of linguocultural differences associated with the artistic interpretation of the play by the translator.
