“The Serious Writer” John B. Priestley: Strategies for Creative Success as a Writer

Abstract. The author of the article brings up for discussion the question of the creative success of the English writer John Boynton Priestley within the more large-scale and relevant for modern literary criticism problem of the artist’s literary reputation. The aim of covering this problem is to clarify the position of the writer in the general literary process of the twentieth century and to determine his personality as a specific component of English literature of the last century. The presentation of these problems has been undertaken in the format of introductory theses, but even in this form it has not been systematically carried out before. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by the approaches to a comprehensive analysis of J. B. Priestley’s literary reputation, which allows us to create a more complete picture of this author and his image in the reader. An attempt was made to comprehend the personality of J. B. Priestley in the first row of classical authors and the idea of him as a writer of the “second echelon” was refuted. In the course of the undertaken scientific research, individual facts of J. B. Priestley’s life-creating practice were identified and systematized, reflecting the specifics of the creative behaviour and success of the writer, and their role in developing writer’s literary reputation among his contemporaries was substantiated. The results of the study showed the original position of Priestley, a man and a writer, independent of the conjuncture. The presentation of these problems, which were not previously comprehended systematically, can serve as the foundation for a detailed study of Priestley’s literary reputation, which indicates the promise of this research direction.
