Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the features of some expressive means and techniques used by O. E. Mandelstam in the poems of the pre-revolutionary period, which reflect his creative manner. The article clarifies the details of the poet’s biography that influenced his early work, considers the works in the light of references to world cultures (the eras of Antiquity and the Middle Ages) by the example of the poems “Notre Dame” (1912), “Insomnia. Homer. Sails Growing Tight…” (1915), “A River of Golden Honey…” (August 1917). In addition, the article defines a range of problems, for the disclosure of which the author refers to the historical-literary and historical-cultural context, determines the features of the chronotope as a manifestation of the poet’s creative manner. The scientific novelty lies in the establishment of the structure-forming role of metaphors referring to the human body and world cultures in Mandelstam’s creative work. As a result, the analysis made it possible to single out several groups of such metaphors depending on their role in the text, to expand the literary understanding of the word as a way of cognition in the artistic world of O. E. Mandelstam.
