Abstract. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of conveying nonce words in Yu. R. Sokolov’s translation of George Orwell’s dystopia “Nineteen Eighty-Four” / “1984”. The main attention is paid to the vocabulary of “Newspeak”, presented in the appendix to the novel – “The Principles of Newspeak”. The scientific novelty lies in the identification and description of a non-standard way of rendering the author’s nonce words – “visual synchronization” (which is the combination of the translator’s version and the source lexeme, their sequential arrangement in the text). As a result, it was established that the studied translation involved such techniques as calquing, interfixation, reduction, substitution, replacement and localization. Some units are left unrendered. The principles of euphony, semantic transparency and word-formation simplicity are observed in most cases. The principle of brevity can be regarded as followed considering the objective differences between the English and Russian languages. The attitude towards the principle of morphological uniformity is characterized as inconsistent.
Key words and phrases: Дж. Оруэлл, роман-антиутопия «1984», новояз, окказионализмы, перевод, G. Orwell, dystopian novel “1984”, Newspeak, nonce words, translation
