Abstract. The aim of the paper is to identify the potential of the prefixal word-formation model with the meaning of negation ‘contra-’ in the formation of new lexical units in the modern discourse of the English language. The study is the first to describe the results of using the prefixal word-formation model with the meaning of negation ‘contra-’ when expanding the vocabulary of modern English in such branches of human activity as medicine, chemistry and technical sciences due to the current trend of new vocabulary formation in this way in the specified language. The paper sheds light on the trajectory of development of the prefixal word-formation model with the meaning of negation ‘contra-’ starting from ancient times and ending with the modern period. As a result of the etymological analysis, the root basis in the Latin language is traced, which subsequently contributed to its use in the word-formation model based on the prefix ‘contra-’ in the modern discourse of the English language. Further study of the word-formation model based on the prefix ‘contra-’ showed its productivity in generating a wide layer of vocabulary in various fields of human activity, in particular in medicine, economics, law, engineering, chemistry, radio electronics and others.
