Bowen in terms of its composition, semantics and functioning in the text. The paper examines the English-language vocabulary and phraseology of the colloquial style in the novel, which is characterised from the viewpoint of its semantics and classified by its attribution to thematic groups, determines the scope of use of the analysed units in the text. In addition, the paper identifies the role of the units under consideration in the novel, their connection with the themes of the work, the author’s idea, character description. Scientific originality of the study lies in analysing the use of colloquial style vocabulary in modern English-language fiction, in identifying the links between the thematic organisation of the units under consideration, their emotional and evaluative potential and functions in the text. As a result, it has been shown that the frequency of English colloquial lexical units in the text of the work and their thematic attribution are accounted for by the stylistic features of the novel, its plot, as well as the purposes of characterisation of the protagonist and the most realistic description of his environment.
