Morphological Reduction as a Mechanism of Grammaticalisation in the English and German Languages

Abstract. The article considers morphological reduction as a mechanism of grammaticalisation in the English and German languages. Relevance and originality of the paper are determined by the lack of comparative-contrastive studies conducted by the material of the English and German languages. The author justifies the hypothesis that morphological reduction and grammaticalisation on the whole depend on the level of language analyticity. The conclusions are made that in the English language, morphological reduction is more frequent in comparison with German. This can be explained by the fact that German is morphologically richer than English.
