Abstract. The article is devoted to direct narration in stories by H. H. Munro. This is the most neutral narration type, when aesthetic effect is achieved mainly by means of plot as such; the stories language is simple to the limit, but at the same time the text is not deprived of marked language units, tropes and figures of speech. The basic subject of the stories is social satire - one of the central subjects of the writer’s creative work. The peculiarities of direct narration are illustrated by the material of the stories "Esme", "Gabriel-Ernest" and "The Story-Teller".
