The origins of modern Chinese music: Xiao Yumei and the Peking University Conservatory of Music

Abstract. The aim of the study is to reveal the origins of modern Chinese music, the formation of which was significantly influenced by Xiao Yumei (萧友梅) (1884-1940), a Chinese composer, teacher, musical and public figure. The article describes the creative and professional path of the outstanding Chinese figure in the field of musical art and music education, describes important milestones in the history of the Peking University Conservatory of Music, the first professional music educational institution in China, founded by Xiao Yumei. The scientific novelty of the work lies in identifying the contribution of Xiao Yumei and the activity of the Peking University Conservatory of Music to contemporary musical art and professional music education in China. As a result of the study, the author has proved that the role and place of Xiao Yumei in the emergence of modern Chinese music is difficult to overestimate.
