Arc Image in the Early Byzantine Illuminated Gospels: Symbolism, Geometry, Genesis

Abstract. The article analyzes symbolic meaning and architectonics of miniatures with arch motives in the early Byzantine illuminated Gospels. The paper aims to identify compositional principles, peculiarities of architectonics and symbolic meaning of such miniatures. The author proposes a hypothesis that their composition is based on mathematical principles (golden spiral (Fibonacci spiral) arranged into circle, quadrature of circle). To reveal origins of this approach, the researcher compares the Christian and antique monuments. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the author tries to identify the mathematical principles by which the Byzantine painters were guided. The findings allow concluding on continuity of certain artistic techniques borrowed from antiquity and reinterpreted in the light of the Christian theology.
