Abstract. The paper reveals A. N. Kuropatkin’s views on cultural, historic and strategic importance of railways in the Russian Far East. The authors provide a comprehensive analysis of A. N. Kuropatkin’s views on railway development in the Far Eastern region, trace their evolution depending on the foreign policy situation, and herein lies scientific originality of the study. As a result, it is shown that A. N. Kuropatkin was especially concerned with the Far Eastern railway development, emphasizing its strategic and economic importance. At the same time, he manifested an ambiguous attitude to the Chinese Eastern Railway project, because, on the one hand, it was a shorter route and, consequently, fewer resources were required to protect the railway, but on the other hand, the railway was supposed to run through Manchuria, which worsened Russia’s relations with China and Japan. Before the Russian-Japanese war, Kuropatkin insisted that the railway should run entirely through Russia and considered it possible to abandon the Chinese Eastern Railway project in order to avoid the war with Japan, or at least postpone it.
