Specificity of Studying the Traditional Chinese Ornament: From the Ming Epoch till the "Age of Reforms and Openness"

Abstract. The research objectives are as follows: to analyse and systematize sources on the traditional Chinese ornament, to trace evolution of approaches to its study. The article examines the Chinese art critics’ works and pre-scientific literature sources. Scientific originality of the paper lies in the fact that development of the Chinese school of ornament studies is considered within the framework of the Chinese art-critical tradition. The research findings are as follows: the author provides a detailed survey of the existing domestic sources on the Chinese ornament - from pre-scientific period till the "age of reforms and openness".
