Abstract. The study aims to determine the essence of internal barbarism and formulate its typology. Novelty lies in identifying the role of internal barbarism in the crisis of the civilised society and its further destruction under the influence of external barbarism. This mechanism operates according to the same principles in any era. As a result of the study, such types of internal barbarism have been identified as the corrupt elite and the impoverished common people consumed with unrestrained acquisitiveness, countercultural movements and revolutionary factions that are unable to accept the existing socio-political order.
