Interpretation of the European Fairy Tale Plot in Comic Book: Charles Perrault’s "Donkey Skin" as Rendered by Edmond Baudoin

Abstract. The study aims to identify author’s approaches to mutual adaptation of the structures of a comic book and a traditional fairy tale, using Edmond Baudoin’s comic book "Donkey Skin" as an example. Since currently investigation of the artist’s creative work is only in its initial stage, in particular, approaches to actualisation and interiorisation of fairy-tale plots in Baudoin’s creative work have not come to scholars’ attention yet, scientific novelty of the work is primarily determined by the lack of research on this topic. As a result of the study, the author has found out that the artist manages to adapt variations of conventional structures of a comic book, developed by him, to a classic fairy tale, not only without any losses of its artistic merit, but also enriching it with features of his individual style. The famous plot of Ch. Perrault’s fairy tale gets a modern twist and assumes an important place in the sum of the author’s statements which is a totality of E. Baudoin’s creative heritage.
