Abstract. The research objective is as follows: to describe the difficulties that the Orthodox community faced under the conditions of governmental prohibition. The article examines the process of the Transcarpathian Slavs’ Magyarization that was accompanied by persecution of the Orthodox Christians, including show trials of believers. The author analyses the problem of preserving the Transcarpathian Ukrainians’ national self-identity under the conditions of forced Magyarization. Scientific originality of the study involves justifying the thesis that protection of the Orthodox Church in Transcarpathia became a form of the Transcarpathian Slavs’ struggle to preserve their national identity. The paper introduces previously unpublished archival documents, literary materials into scientific circulation. As a result, it is proved that the Orthodox Church, which underwent persecutions and show trials, preserved its parishes and managed to become a bastion of the Slavs’ struggle against forced Magyarization at the beginning of the XX century.
