Mass Music and Metamorphoses of Aesthetic Categories of Sublime and Beautiful

Abstract. The article raises the problem of transformation of the aesthetic categories of sublime and beautiful in mass music. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that relying on historical and hermeneutic methods, the authors for the first time apply theoretical conceptions by T. Adorno, R. Barthes, M. Foucault for an analysis of mass music. These conceptions lead to substantial changes in meaning of the categories under study. The paper reveals features of their influence on mass consciousness, which provokes social consequences. As a result, the authors conclude that nowadays, the categories of sublime and beautiful in mass music have lost their status as an aesthetic value, landmark for mass consciousness. Cultural and historical meaning of mass music can be defined as hedonism of illusions and illusion of hedonism.
