Abstract. The aim of the study is to reveal the role of a symbol in modern culture, based on the philosophical method of categorical analysis. The scientific originality of the work lies in the fact that when analysing the symbol, code and structure of the text as a whole, the traditional methods of philology, hermeneutics and phenomenology are supplemented by both the classical dialectics of categorical pairs and non-classical ontology that sets the existential and social-humanities "coordinates" of the study. As a result, it has been proved that literary and mathematical texts, different in their form and content, have common ontological foundations, which can be systematically presented in the form of categorical schemes, while maintaining the possibility of philosophical, anthropological and culturological interpretation of specific symbolic forms.
