Cultural Heritage Sites and the Tuvans’ Ethnic Identity

Abstract. The paper aims to identify the impact of cultural landscape and historical and cultural heritage on the formation of the Tuvans’ ethnic identity. The article considers the main types of historical and natural sites which create a strong image of the motherland in the Tuvans’ mind: mounds, ovaa, khuree, sacred springs, etc. The scientific originality of the research consists in the complex analysis of the sources of the Tuvans’ ethnic identity formation. The results have shown that although the specific view of the world created by the cultural and natural landscapes lost some of its content in the second half of the 20th - early 21st century, it still serves as a basis for the Tuvans’ ethnic identity.
