Policy of "Great Exploration of the West" in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China

Abstract. The paper aims to consider the main aspects of the economic policy of the Chinese government concerning the western provinces in the 2000s by the example of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The scientific originality of the research consists in the complex analysis of what is called the policy of "Great Exploration of the West" based on the premises, content and initial results of the reforms. Meanwhile, the study is multidisciplinary. As a result, it has been identified that the economic policy of Beijing, to a certain extent, undoubtedly contributed to the social-economic development of XUAR, but at the same time it intensified the complex of issues such as the increase of extremism and separatism which are based on inter-ethnic contradictions between the Han people and the Uyghurs.
