Model of Forming the Kryashen Ethno-Confessional Identity

Abstract. The research objective includes identifying the stages of forming ethno-confessional identity among a sub-ethnic group of the Volga-Ural Tatars - Kryashens (the Christianised Tatars). The paper proposes a model of forming the Christianised Tatars’ special confessional identity represented in their self-designation Kryashens (baptised), traces its genesis. Relying on the existing empirical data, the author suggests a model of identity development among the Tatar confessional group, which constitutes scientific originality of the study. The research findings are as follows: the author proves that the Kryashen identity was formed due to a special confessional status and long-term cultural isolation of the Christianised Tatars from their Muslim compatriots.
