Abstract. The purpose of the study is to assess the role that the composer N. A. Manykin-Nevstruev played in formation of musical aesthetics of Moscow Art Theatre’s productions. Scientific novelty of the research is connected to involvement of archival materials from collections of the MHAT Museum and A. A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum, on the basis of which creative activity of the article’s central character is for the first time studied in its entirety. As a result of examination of various data from published and unpublished sources, multifaceted significance of Manykin-Nevstruev’s activity is determined. He emerged as a founder of the theatre’s musical sector, established principles of cooperation between musicians and directors, preceded the "epoch of I. A. Sats" - the first culmination of the drama theatre music in the XX century.
