Evolution of Notions "Volost" and "Ulus" among the Siberian Tatars in the XVI-XVII Centuries

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal the content of the notions "volost" and "ulus" and to identify their place in the Siberian Tatars’ social and political structure in the XVI-XVII centuries. The author introduces new approaches to defining the notions "volost" and "ulus", analyses changes in the Siberian Tatars’ social structure resulting from integration of the Siberian Khanate into the Russian state, which constitutes scientific originality of the study. The following conclusions are justified: the social and political structure of the Siberian Khanate, based on the clan principle, had its own peculiarities associated with the yasak Tatars’ and serving Tatars’ lifestyle, which manifested itself in evolution of the notions "volost" and "ulus" in the "Khanate" and "Russian" periods.
