"Book of Lamentations" by Gregory of Narek: Anthropological Aspects

Abstract. The article examines "Book of Lamentations" of the ancient Armenian monk of the X century Grigor Narekatsi, or Gregory of Narek (950-1003), a unique experience of repentance and confession. The research objective includes analysing St. Gregory’s anthropological views. For that purpose the researcher for the first time in domestic theological studies examines his doctrine of a human, soul, salvation and ways to fight inner sins as a valuable source of the Christian anthropology. In Narekatsi’s teaching, an individual is considered not as an autonomous personality but as a representative of the humanity, therefore, an individual’s soul is responsible for all the human sins - this thesis is a basis of his confessional matrix aimed to achieve deification.
