Influence of Molokan Ideology and Discourse on Formation of the Russian Protestantism in the XIX Century

Abstract. The article reveals influence of the Shtundists and the Molokans, in particular the "Water Molokans" of Tiflis and Baku province and the Don Molokans, on formation of the South Russian baptism in the XIX century. The Don Molokans massively joined the Baptist movement introducing their own semi-Pelagianistic soteriology (contrary to the Calvinistic soteriology adopted by the Trans-Caucasian Baptists). Specificity of the Don Molokans lies in the fact that they adopted dogmas of the Orthodox Church, in particular, recognized all the seven sacraments. They introduced the Arminian trend, pacifist views, a special approach to Eucharist and water baptism into the Russian baptism. The research methodology includes historical, typological, comparative analysis, hermeneutic method and the analysis of religious discourses. Prospects for further studies on the Molokan discourse’s influence on the Russian baptism and Evangelicalism are outlined.
