Medical Secrecy in Russia at the Turn of the XIX-XX Centuries: Origins of Ethical Analysis

Abstract. The study aims to trace retrospectively the formation of the medical secrecy concept in Russia. The article makes an attempt to identify the origins of medical secrecy coming into being in the Russian medicine through a comparative analysis of the distinguished Russian doctors’ individual viewpoints before and after the 1917 Russian Revolution. Scientific novelty of the research lies in determining the period, which laid foundation for an ethical analysis of medical secrecy in Russia contributing to gradual transition to its legal assessment. The attained results have demonstrated that the medical community actively began to discuss relevance of medical secrecy at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries.
