Alessandro Magnasco and T. Adorno’s Theory of Modernism

Abstract. The article provides interpretation of Alessandro Magnasco’s (1667-1749) creative work in the context of T. Adorno’s theory of modernism. The Italian painter’s art is analysed through the prism of Frankfurt school theoretical conceptions - "nature conquest" project, rational irrationalism, new archaic, crisis of meaning. T. Adorno’s approaches are compared with other modernistic approaches to art (Clement Greenberg, Werner Hofmann). The researcher concludes that Magnasco’s "modernistic strategies", tendency to emphasize the formal element should be considered from the viewpoint of the post-structuralist model of deconstruction anticipated in T. Adorno’s works.
