Organization of Social Services and Living Space under Social-Economic Transformations of the 1960-1980s (by the Example of the Lower Don Countryside)

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal specificity of social sphere development in the countryside in the 1960-1980s by the example of the Lower Don region. Relying on previously unpublished sources, the author explores the social aspect of everyday life of the Lower Don region residents in the late Soviet period, which constitutes scientific originality of the study. The conducted research allows concluding that development of social services in the rural areas of the Lower Don region was in tune with the general tendency for the growth of the service sector, but some of the services were unrequired in the rural community or insufficiently developed. The following basic tendencies are identified: improvement of the people’s living conditions and erosion of their traditional lifestyle.
