COLOUR PALETTE OF ISLAM AND BUDDHISM IN THE ICON "THE SAVIOUR NOT MADE BY HANDS" OF THE XVII CENTURY FROM THE STATE TRETYAKOV GALLERY FUNDS

Abstract. In the article, the icon of the XVII century "The Saviour Not Made by Hands "Weep Not for Me, Mother"" from the funds of the State Tretyakov Gallery is analysed. The authors draw attention to the colour palette of the icon including the dominance of the orange colour that is not typical of Orthodoxy and the use of green tones when depicting a cross. The icon is compared with other famous examples of Orthodox art created for the Christianization of the non-Orthodox peoples including "The Redeemer Conferring a Blessing" from the Pinacotheca of Vatican and the collection of icons from the funds of the State Museum of Local History of Irkutsk region. It is concluded that "The Saviour Not Made by Hands" was intended for the Christianization of the Muslims and the Buddhists of Siberia.
